OPN's First Ever Lunch at Vics a Success!
On Thursday, September 20, OPN held its first ever Lunch at Vics, Vics being
Victorians’ Midnight Café near the corner of Neil and 5th Avenues
in Columbus. We had around 20 attendees consisting of old friends and a few
new faces. Six students from Thomas Worthington High School also joined us after
reading about the event on the Internet and receiving permission from their
teacher to attend and observe. The students had the privilege of quizzing one
of THE gurus of cannabis, Athens attorney Don Wirtshafter. The rapport was lively
and informative and the food was excellent as always. Many thanks to staff at
Vics -- especially Connie Harris -- for providing great service in an eclectic
atmosphere. Look for many similar get-togethers in the future!
Upcoming Meetings
Online meetings represent one of the primary ways OPN and OPAN conduct business.
It's a great feeling to speak with like-minded people from all over Ohio in
real time and, in the process, plan how we're going to make a big difference
in this state.

The Aug. 18 Dispatch article "Medical marijuana may go on Ohio ballot"
mentions that Michigan voters soon may vote on allowing medicinal use of marijuana.
A dozen states already allow this, for one fundamental reason: Cannabis is medicine.
Documented medicinal use of the plant goes back more than 6,000 years and the
plant was a widely recognized remedy until politics took control of it in the
1930s and led to bans on research and patient use.

Their view: Cannabis could replace harmful meds
By Chris Goldstein and Paul Armentano, September 8, 2007-- Millions of Americans
are living in pain; so many, in fact, that doctors now prescribe enough painkillers
in a single year to medicate every person in the nation. According to a disturbing
new study by the Associated Press, Americans in 2005 consumed over 90,000 kilograms
of powerful narcotic painkillers, not only codeine, hydrocodone and morphine,
but also meperidine (Demerol) and oxycodone. In many cases, these drugs can
be habit-forming. In some cases, their use can be deadly.

by Morley Safer, 60 Minutes - CBS News September 20th, 2007 -- The idea was
a noble one: pass a law to make marijuana legal for cancer and AIDS sufferers

Imler thought would one day put the drug in pharmacies has instead created "pot
dealers in storefronts" who sell to anyone with doctors' notes that are
fairly easy to obtain.
