From the President of OPN
The Waiting Game
Like many patients, I make frequent trips to the doctor. There's always that
seemingly endless wait. Waiting in the Waiting Room. Waiting in the exam room.
Waiting. Waiting. Frankly, I become bored. During one visit - after I perused
the golf course paintings, thumbed through the magazines left by other patients,
and scrutinized the proudly displayed diplomas - I noticed a consistent presence:
the pharmaceutical industry. I decided to write down the names of all the products
I saw in the exam room. Mind you, this list doesn't come from waiting area,
nor the hallway, nor lab, nor even the office in its entirety. Merely one little
exam room:

LTE: 200,000 Ohioans imprisoned and tortured by State Legislators
This is an estimate of the number of combined sufferers of Cancer, Aids, Multiple
Sclerosis, chronic pain, and dozens of other diseases and injuries that would
benefit by the legalization of Medicinal Marijuana. Daily suffering and nausea
is a way of life for these people, and our state government eases their burdens
by prosecuting them for trying to get some relief from this agony. Our state
leaders have refused to step into the 21st century with a growing number of
states that have legalized the use of medicinal cannabis for pain, muscle spasms,
nausea, wasting syndroms, psychological disorders, etc. Many believe that Marinol
is medical marijuana, but they are wrong. Marinol is synthetic THC (the active
ingredient in cannabis) and only works some of the time, and only for nausea
and wasting syndroms, not for pain or muscle spasms.

State Imposes 1000% Fee Hike on Medical Mariuana ID Cards
by Kevin Reed, The Green Cross (Jan. 10, 2007) -- The California Dept of Health
Services has announced a major fee hike for the state medical marijuana ID cards,
from $13 to $142. This is the state's share; counties charge an additional fee.
On behalf of thousands of San Francisco cannabis patients I am writing to ask
if you have heard about this new outrageous policy. Patients need your help
NOW more than ever. With the new local laws requiring patients to get the State
I.D. card to enter MCD's and now this drastic increase in the card program by
almost $150, patients will need to pay $200 for an ID card every year. This
has gone far beyond preposterous. Where are patient's rights? How can patients
afford to keep fighting bad policy?
