REEFER MADNESS - Examining a Silly Law

Last Friday night, I met up with a buddy downtown, went to a bar and had a few drinks. Well, let's say my friend had a few. The vodka and tonics were tasting pretty good, and maybe I overdid it a bit too.

What Would Jesus Do? Religious Communities as Drug Reform Allies

7/21/06 -- By any measure, the United States is a highly religious country. More Americans claim to believe in God and attend church regularly than in any other Western industrial democracy, and religiously-based claims carry great weight in American politics. But the drug reform movement, much of it secular and unattached to traditional religious practices, has only begun to make serious inroads with these powerful groups.

Depression

Using data of the ongoing National Longitudinal Survey of Youth of 1979 researchers of the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore investigated the influence of cannabis use on the development of depression. A total of 8,759 adults (age range 29-37 years) interviewed in 1994 had complete data on past- year cannabis use and current depression. The risk for depression was significantly increased by 1.4 in cannabis users in comparison to the non-using group. However, after adjustment for possible influencing factors the risk was no longer increased in the cannabis group. (Source: Harder VS, et al. Addiction 2006;101(10):1463-72.)

GIVE MEDICAL MARIJUANA ACT THE LATITUDE PATIENTS DESERVE

New Jersey lawmakers will soon consider whether to pass into law the New Jersey Compassionate Use Medical Marijuana Act (S-88 and A-933). The act would remove the statewide criminal penalties for the use, possession and cultivation of a small amount of marijuana for qualified patients under a program administered by the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services (NJDHSS). The Coalition for Medical Marijuana--New Jersey (CMM-NJ) urges lawmakers to support the bill as it is written. Some lawmakers have said that the bill is too broad--that too many patients will qualify for medical marijuana when it passes. CMM-NJ opposes any attempt to restrict the diseases or conditions that would qualify a New Jersey patient for medical marijuana. This is a question that is properly left only to the treating physician. There are, moreover, a number of rare conditions that respond well to medical marijuana.
