Rush Limbaugh Calls Medical Marijuana Patients "Maggot-Infested, Dope Smoking Crowd"

April 21, 2006 -- Rush Limbaugh on the recent FDA "report" claiming that there is no medicinal value in marijuana: "The FDA says there's no -- zilch, zero, nada -- shred of medicinal value to the evil weed marijuana. This is going to be a setback to the long-haired, maggot-infested, dope-smoking crowd."

Raich Still Fighting for Medi-Pot Rights

By Jordan Smith, Austin Chronicle (April 14th, 2006)-- Medical-marijuana patient, and its fiercest advocate, Angel Raich, was back in federal court on March 27, where her lawyers argued before a three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals that the Constitution and the common-law doctrine of medical necessity protect Raich's use of medi-pot and make unconstitutional the federal government's attempts to enforce pot prohibition against sick and dying patients.

Mocking Marijuana's Virtues Is Criminal

By Steve Young, American Politics Journal (April 11th, 2006)-- Nothing more reveals the damage the broadcast Lords of Loud inflict than actually seeing the faces of those their blather stings. Distancing themselves from the affect of their words doesn't make their culpability any smaller. Same goes for legislators who vote without first looking at the inhumanity their decisions will cause -- or sometimes worse -- what good their decisions deny.

APPLICATIONS FOR MEDICAL MARIJUANA

Chronically ill patients who want to use medicinal marijuana began submitting applications under a new state law. In January, Rhode Island became the first state to sanction the use of medical marijuana since the Supreme Court ruled that the authorities could prosecute marijuana users, even in states that allow it to be used medicinally. Four people submitted applications, and 51 others are being completed, said Maria Wah-Fitta, a spokeswoman for the Rhode Island Department of Health. The state has 30 days to verify with a physician that the patient is eligible for the program. A patient and a caretaker can possess up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana or up to 12 plants. The patient and caretaker must carry cards that identify them as part of the program at all times.

GLOSSING OVER MISTREATMENT IN THE MAGBIE CASE

Jonathan Magbie was a 27-year-old man who was paralyzed from the neck down as a result of a childhood accident. Although he had never been convicted of a criminal offense and although he required private nursing care for as much as 20 hours a day, Magbie was given a 10-day sentence in the D.C. jail in September 2004 by D.C. Superior Court Judge Judith E. Retchin for possession of a marijuana cigarette. He died in city custody four days later. His story has been the subject of several previous columns.

THE POLITICS OF POT

The Bush administration's habit of politicizing its scientific agencies was on display again this week when the Food and Drug Administration, for no compelling reason, unexpectedly issued a brief, poorly documented statement disputing the therapeutic value of marijuana. The statement was described as a response to numerous inquiries from Capitol Hill, but its likely intent was to buttress a crackdown on people who smoke marijuana for medical purposes and to counteract state efforts to legalize the practice.

DREHER'S JAMAICAN PREGNANCY STUDY

More Suppression of Marijuana Research -- In the 1980s Melanie Dreher and colleagues at UMass Amherst began a longitudinal study to assess the well-being of infants and children whose mothers used cannabis during pregnancy. The researchers lived in rural Jamaican communities among the women they were studying. Thirty cannabis-using pregnant women were matched for age and socio-economic status with 30 non-users. Dreher et al compared the course of their pregnancies and their neo-natal outcomes, using various standard scales.
