A letter written by Mary Jane Borden, Director of Public Relations, Ohio Patient Network to Stanley Steamer

Dear Stanley Steamer,

Just a moment ago, I saw a commercial in which you pitched your carpet cleaning services by indicating that you hire only certain types of people. Background checks are very useful in determining who are desired employees. Drug testing, on the other hand, is not.

I am assuming that your organization is using drug testing as a means for denying patients who use cannabis (marijuana) therapeutically employment, even if they are qualified for the position and pass the background check. For the 1,000+ of people with whom the Ohio Patient Network (http://www.ohiopatient.net) has contact, this is unacceptable.

Cannabis has proven to be useful in treating a myriad of conditions from AIDS, to glaucoma, to MS, to nausea from chemotherapy, to chronic pain, and much more. Note that an estimated 50-70 million people in the U.S. suffer from chronic pain, not to mention the millions who are diagnosed with these other conditions. These people can be made "whole" and productive through the use of cannabis, but now, with discriminatory drug testing, they can't find employment.

Thus, with this message and its posting to our many lists, I respectfully ask that OPN members, medical cannabis patients throughout the State of Ohio, and those who care about this issue refrain from doing business with Stanley Steamer.

If you can provide me with evidence that you are not discriminating against medical cannabis patients in your employment practices, then I will graciously rescind this request.
