HAMILTON COUNTY JAIL TAX DEFEATED: Marijuana's role |
|
|
|
|
Nov 7 - Ohio's Hamilton County voters rejected a sales tax for a
new jail despite a well-funded campaign on the part of the proponents. Marijuana
and Cincinnati's toughened possession laws were a continual part of the dialog
by opponents.
The coalition opposing the laws was a "strange bedfellow" collection
ranging from the NAACP to anti-tax Republicans groups. Included in that group
was OPN, who participated in raising the required signatures for the issue to
be on the ballot. We also participated in Press conferences, and testimony at
several public hearings.
Bottom line, OPN and Marijuana provided significant assistance in defeating
a sales tax for a new jail here in Cincinnati.
Side item at the opponent's final news conference for turning in the ballot
petition, the prime organizer recognized my own efforts as one of the top petition
signature gatherers and received an award plaque in recognition.
