Welcome to the OPN Speakers Bureau

Orientation and Training

 

 

This training course is designed to help you prepare for typical speaking situations that you may encounter as an OPN speakers bureau member.  Our goals are to promote a sense of community among speakers bureau members and to develop our diverse skills and experiences to support the OPN’s mission of public education.

Course Description:  Find out what we’ll be doing and why.

 

WEEK 1 TRAINING MATERIALS 

·        Speech Events:  Choose the sample event that interests you most.

·        Lesson 1:  Review this lesson about analyzing the speaking event and coordinating with a group.

·        Activity 1: Complete these speech-building activities and post your results on the OPN bulletin board.

 

WEEK 2 TRAINING MATERIALS 

·        Lesson 2:  Read about planning your speech strategy.

·        Activity 2:  Think strategy and then post your ideas on the OPN bulletin board.

 

WEEK 3 TRAINING MATERIALS

·        Lesson 3:  Identify what you know and research for what you need to know.

·        Activity 3:  Share your evidence with your team using the OPN bulletin board.

 

WEEK 4 TRAINING MATERIALS

·        Lesson 4:  Create your speaking outline and plan your visual aids.

·        Speech Outline Format:  Review this template, which illustrates the parts of a speech outline.

·        Activity 4:  Email your outline to me and your teammates, and post your visual aid ideas to the OPN bulletin board.

 

WEEK 5 TRAINING MATERIALS

·        Lesson 5:  Practice your speech, project confident nonverbal delivery and manage speech anxiety.

·        Activity 5:  Post your stress stories, and practice your speech at a Speakers Bureau gathering.

 

This course breaks the material into weekly segments.  However, once you are comfortable with the process, you can complete all the steps and build an entire speech in a week or less.
